Chainsaw Flame

from Angels in the Cinnamon Tree by BAAN

/

about

This song is dedicated with love and respect to the memory of Peter Oakley, the internet grandad, who was very kind to me. This was his favourite song of mine. I hope he is listening somewhere.

lyrics

There is a tree, it stands alone
With bitter bark and time upon its bones
Do you think that trees don't fall?
They seem to last forever after all

To a tree the world goes rushing by
The sun is just a bright line in the sky
Humanity (a madness) rules the world
By chainsaw and flame, without face or name

When the old tree goes, pointing up his toes
The soil will eat his soul, God only knows
The seeds that sprout, the bugs that crawl
Mushrooms grow along the wall
Where lovers once stood tall beneath the rain
Sheltered from the sky
They will stand there again
When time delivers all his promises

When you cut him down for tables and for chairs
And sailing ships and roofs and stairs
Touch wood you say to bring you fortune
But nothing can prepare you for the fall that comes too soon
Run swiftly from the tide, hiding from the Moon
