Mr. Bumble 04:47
Into the darkness falls Mr Bumble Into the darkness he starts to crumble His face is spoken His place is broken Carries the token Meets the good folk in the sea, and the Moon Rising in June All comes too soon For the fools who still fly by balloon Fall, down Down, fall Summer is calling him to the surface Crawls through the darkness Up through the corpses Evidence aliens came here in distant times Is all he has [Scottish gibberish] Under a blue sky

she go slow 06:39
Gotta get yourself a little piece of heaven Gotta get yourself a little piece of the world Gotta get yourself a way out of here She go fast She go slow Nobody knows where the morning goes Nobody knows where the garden grows Nobody knows the things they don’t know She go fast She slow She go faster She go slowly You gotta take a dive Just as long as you stay alive Down through the bones Of Kilometre Jones He’s seven miles down And there he takes the crown She go fast She go slow It’s the winter that keeps you there Devil’s coachman in your hair In the sweet embrace of the Mushroom King He sees your soul, he wants everything She go fast She go slow On his way to the new place He found a craft from deep space But he was out of his face Pissing his clothes A real disgrace Sold his story to the gutter The man on TV said he was a nutter They asked his teachers and even his mother Said his own sister was his lover She go fast She go slow

I wear your ring You’re my everything I’m not nothing What will my future bring? I am your King I am your King Down in the deep Gargantuan sleeps Struggles to rise, death in his eyes Can’t see the light, perpetual night Come all ye hither, your forest a-wither He’s not your King He’s not your King Rosemary Rosemary Rosemary my Rosemary I Rise to thee, I Will reach your sky I am your King I am your King Don’t you weep my Rosemary Secrets I keep betwixt me and thee Breathe in the air, say that you care In and outwith, you are everywhere I am your King I am your King [Miles Davis: We used one, no we used sixty seconds of four cuts, and I said at the end just put them all together, let them hang over each other, you know, like a pyramid. They said, what, you can’t do that. I said, yes you can too you just do it. It’s the same thing, the same approach. You see, you have to balance it, you have to balance it before you can go off it, you know what I mean? In other words, you have to balance, for me, for my mind, you have to balance things before you tear them apart.]

Will you be on my side In the wars to come? There’s a turning tide That’s how the war is won I cannot trust you my perilous one You are my cosmos, my only son Your words are weapons My work has begun Building walls at the point of a gun Is it safe? Have the monsters gone? I’ve been living under this rock Since God was young Gargantuan It’s not all black and white There is no wrong or right We are the virtuous few This world is not for you We cannot trust him, he will not hold The battle ground, the center will fold The walls crumble, the angels fall Millions are lost, and we’re counting them all Is it safe? Have the monsters gone? I’ve been living under this rock Since God was young Gargantuan!

[Frank Zappa: The reality is invented for you by people who choreograph it. There’s gotta be an office in Washington some place, where a bunch of people that you’ve never heard of choreograph reality. It’s not just what the next photo opp is going to be, it’s what is the interpretation of a given international event, and this has to be generally dispensed through the media, with no questions asked.]

We are the ones who live far below your feet We are the ones who hide under your street We are the ones you don’t see when you look down We are the ones, our lies undermine your town Dig and you die, go deep underground You are the sky, we hear every sound Footsteps falling rattle like a drum Frying like a worm when the morning comes Here in the darkness we can see you Don’t go for help, no-one will believe you Our day will come Our day will come Our day will come! We have no sun We have no lungs We have no tongues We have no air [Frank Zappa: Reality is invented for you.] Further in the deep Gargantuan Makes his way up toward the sun Rosemary (his eternal muse) Promises a love he dare not refuse Eyes on the prize, it lies on the horizon It’s not surprising how fast he’s rising Gargantuan will meet the day We have no sun We have no lungs We have no tongues We have no air

If I go down I’m taking you Taking you down In the ground Gargantuan Rosemary Little creatures Cannot see Stuck to the street Gravity Dead on my feet Insanity Don’t look around You may find Something profound Blows your mind I cannot see Infinity Looking at me Let it be Under the Sun Everyone You ever knew Lost to you Perilous one Comes undone Revolution Will not come Nothing to see On TV I’m in the sky Way up high He said, the time has come To go, the angel said Your name, now it’s time More than time To go home But billionaires don’t listen to Angels when they call

Middle class heroes Aren’t really there Existential zeroes Always end up nowhere He’s so middle class That’s how much he hates it Bottom of a whisky glass Drinks it down and fakes it They call him Mr Bumble Every day at his work Hazy days he stumbles They all think he’s a jerk Suddenly there’s a rumble In the floor under Mr Bumble Rosemary in the backyard Falls and hits the ground so hard He runs to her through the garden gate Nearly makes it but he’s too late The yard is gone dear Rosemary Nowhere in sight, where can she be Poor Mr Bumble looked down into the hole Where the garden used to be He briefly considered leaping in With some vague notion of saving dearest Rosemary Plan B was a quick call to 999 Meaning all kinds of hubbub The whisky glass still in hand was empty So he got in the car and went to the pub

You don’t have the stomach for this work, my boy My darling one You will never plunge The knife between The ribs, it’s obscene But it must be done The monster must be slain He must die in pain Lest he rise again My kingdom will be thine You will take what now is mine Would you let it all decay, Drain the coffers, watch it slip away? When the Devil stands before the walls Will you abandon them, ignore their calls? What kind of monster will you be? Forever lost, or writing history? What will you be? How will you feel? Gargantuan How will you feel My only son? Why do you always seek the soil? What find you there but death and toil? Your heart is made of gold You never will grow old What kind of monster will you become? Gargantuan

Deep in the sky He can fly like an angel flies Deep in his mind Lies forever land All humankind Going home He wonders why He can fall like an angel falls Deep in the dark In his overalls He’ll be fixing no TVs today He is the King He is the one who will Set you all free He’s on the TV What could go wrong? Give him your money now Get out your wallet Fixing his brain He can call on Forever Man His best friend is a fool Laying down cables in the ground He is the fool He is the one who will die again The hand of another On his steering wheel Taking the corner Too fast Forever Man Some kind of a hero Gargantuan Never a zero Rosemary It was all part of her plan I’m glad she made it

about

Recorded in East Lothian late October early November 2020.

All tracks composed by Peri Urban and Largy Baan, except "middle class hero" which was written by Peri Urban and Michael Cobley.

Produced and engineered by Peri Urban.

This album came as an unexpected gift. It seems to me that it's an Allegorical Metaphorism

We were experimenting with combining two discrete drum styles - jazz and modern dance - with no intention beyond that. So, five over four with a four to the floor feel, or straight fours with jazz-like ornamentation. Twelve collections of drum patterns were prepared, without forming any defined structure. That was achieved on day one just by experimentation, each collection being in a deliberately different tempo from all the rest.

Frappa had been collecting guitar effects pedals, and wanted to write product reviews for them. What better way than to actually use them for recording? Days two and three saw the addition of the majority of the guitar parts, with the initial emergence of nascent structures. Introduction, verse/chorus, break and ending were more or less established.

On day four DD added the bass guitar, and Largy began writing lyrics and gathering melodies.

On days five and six the structures were solidified and vocals were added, all singers combining throughout the tracks to provide lead and backing. Keyboards and additional guitars were also added at this point.

By day seven all tracking was complete and mixing began.

Within a few days that process was completed and the album was mastered and uploaded.

None of the songs were pre-written, except for part of “middle class hero”, which stems from a collaboration between Peri Urban and Michael Cobley in 1978.

The album was completed so quickly that I have almost no idea of how it happened, what it is, or where it came from. I provided the meat and the metal. Anything beyond that is more of a mystery to me than it is to you.
